Summing Up :- The
camp was conducted in the lush greenery of the Satpudas in the
most idyllic and peaceful surroundings. Though there were no civic
amenities likde those available in the city. It was a learning
experience for the resource persons. These resource persons are
formally trained in basic group counselling skills but they do
not accept any remuneration for conducting these workshops. It
was an experiment which succeeded because of the team work and
good groundwork prepared by the Vice Principal of the School Mr.
uddhav Patil and his three colleagues. The food was excellent
though provided at different indigenous hotels in the small town.
The Students responses were heartening. they
appreciated the efforts taken for them. the students have a keen
desire to work hard and struggle against all odds to face the challenges
of education. Their will to make the most of available opportunities
is strong, but what they lack is the basic infrastructural facilities.
One student said that his ideal study location was on top of a hill
when he grazed cattle. another said that what he needed was a set
of books. Communication between the participants and resource persons
was two-way. at the valedictory function the students showed self
confidence and expressed a desire to come to Jai Hind College for
higher education.
This camp was successful
for awareness building, self confidence and the need for additional
skill development. The students were clear in articulating their
thoughts and needs. A similar camp is planned in the month of
December for students of Nandurbar district.
More than 20 students
who needed financial help to cmplete their education were identified
at Jai Hind college by filling in a personal bio-data form and
personal interviews conducted by the Principal, co-ordinators
and a team of teachers. Economically, socially underprivileged,
marginalised groups, girl-students, minority community students
were given preference. Seven of these students have been given
scholarships by India-Asha and another ten are financed by an
NRI Dr. L.T. Shimpi from north Carolina. the staff of Jai Hind
college have set up a fund on their own initiative to help generate
financial help for needy students on the campus.
These students were then
divided into groups and allotted duties on four consecutive sundays
for a cleanliness drive launched on the campus for 4 hours every
day. These students groups swept the class-rooms, removed cob-webs,
picked up rubbish, mowed the lawn, wiped the pillars and walls
and such other work.
The objective was to generate
in the students the principle of the dignity of labour. The financial
help was to be earned through the students' own hard work giving
him a sense of self worth and dignity. The students worked under
the close supervision of a team of teachers. The activity was
besides the regular N.S.S. and N.C.C. civic Awareness drives.
